Most of the lands and oceans on the Earth have been explored and charted. There are few places left to discover in the 21st Century. However, the underground world conceals plenty of potential geographic discoveries – still unrevealed caves and caverns. Speleology (“caving”) is a science that explores caves and related phenomena.
In August 2010 the caving club Aenigma together with the partners from the Ukraine, France, Spain, Ireland and Serbia is organizing an international expedition to the deepest cave in the world Krubera-Voronya.
Krubera-Voronya cave sometimes is called the Underground Everest or the Bottom of the World and is the only cave on the Earth deeper than 2 km. Its official depth is 2,191 metres.
The main objectives of the expedition are:
•to descend to the sump S-5 “Two captains” (-45m deep) on the bottom of the cave and try to explore unknown passage of the cave.
•to take the data of the digital water level loggers that were installed in 2009 and reprogram them for next 4 years;
•to explore further the Spanish branch at the depth of 1340 m.
The international team will also:
•take some specimens of cave insects for identification & habitat study;
•take photographs of exploration.
During the expedition the team will adhere to strict ecological requirements and will strive to do minimal harm to the cave’s ecosystem: they will use only electric lightning systems.
